Sawhorse  DSCF2044c

A novella, and a meditation on grief, love, loss and going home.

“There was wood to be cut, therefore I got cut too, like the old sawhorse, under the passing saw …”

Nelson Harmon retreats to his family farm following a sudden devastating loss. On the flank of the mountain, alone except for the enigmatic “Renter” living in the old farmhouse, at first Harmon, chopping wood, scraping paint, tending an orchard, is “only a body walking” in grief.

As the summer heat swells, other, almost hallucinatory losses surface:

“Look at any field, stand on the sweat from skin, the spit from mouths that are dead. Three miles down the road, are buried their bones. Time is enormous, my mother once said, we saved what we could.” Like his father before him, working the same land, Harmon does not so much sleep as “wait for the light.”
